STIKD Mini USB UV Lamp for semi-cured gel wraps

How to choose the right nail lamp for your gel manicure

A nail lamp is the most important tool in an at-home gel manicure, and the most misunderstood. Some gels don't need one at all. Others need one, but not just any lamp. Here's how to match the lamp to the gel, so your manicure lasts as long as it should.

The quick answer

STIKD system Needs a lamp? Our Mini USB UV Lamp?
Semi-cured Gel Wraps Yes, about 60 seconds Yes, made for it
UV Free Gel Wraps No Not needed
Press-Ons No Not needed

Why some gels need a lamp

Gel stays soft until UV or LED light sets it. That's called curing, and it's what turns gel hard, glossy and long-lasting. UV Free Gel Wraps and Press-Ons are cured in the factory, so there's nothing left to do at home. Semi-cured Gel Wraps still need a little light to finish the job.

What our Mini USB UV Lamp is made for

Semi-cured Gel Wraps are a thin layer of gel that's already partly cured. The lamp only has to finish the last bit, so our compact Mini USB UV Lamp does it in about a minute. It's small enough for a handbag and runs off any USB port.

It's made for gel wraps, not liquid gel polish. Liquid gel goes on thicker and starts completely uncured, so it needs a more powerful lamp to set all the way down to the nail. Use a small lamp on liquid gel and the top can feel hard while the bottom stays soft, which leads to lifting and peeling.

Think of it like a hairdryer. A travel dryer is perfect for a quick touch-up, but it isn't built to dry a full head of thick, wet hair. Different tool, different job.

What to look for in a nail lamp

  1. UV/LED (dual light). Most nail gels respond to both, and a lamp labelled UV/LED covers them.
  2. Enough power for your gel. For semi-cured wraps, a compact lamp is enough. For liquid gel polish, check the polish brand's recommended wattage and cure time.
  3. Room for your whole hand. You want all four fingers flat and centred, with a spot for your thumb, so every nail gets the same light.
  4. A timer. Preset buttons take the guesswork out of cure times.
  5. Bonus: a low-heat mode. Gel can feel warm while it cures, especially under a strong lamp. A low-heat setting ramps up gently.

How to tell if your gel has cured

  • It feels hard and smooth, not bendy or tacky.
  • It doesn't dent when you press it gently with another nail.
  • Still soft? Cure it again for the full time.

Good lamp habits

  • Cure one hand at a time, fingers flat and centred.
  • Do your thumbs separately if they don't sit under the light.
  • Wipe your lamp clean so nothing blocks the light.

The bottom line

No lamp? Choose UV Free Gel Wraps or Press-Ons. Have our mini lamp, or any UV/LED nail lamp? You're set for Semi-cured Gel Wraps.
