STIKD gel nail wraps at home

How to do a gel manicure at home: 3 ways, compared

You don't need a salon booking, two free hours and a babysitter to have gel nails. There are three easy ways to do a gel manicure at home with STIKD, and the right one comes down to three questions: how long do you want it to last, how much time do you have, and do you own a UV/LED lamp?

Here's the honest breakdown, from the method that lasts longest to the one that's quickest on.

The short version

Method Lasts Takes Lamp?
Semi-cured Gel Wraps 14+ days About 30 min Yes
UV Free Gel Wraps 10+ days About 20 min No
Press-Ons 7+ days About 3 min No

Notice the pattern? The more time you put in, the longer it lasts. None of them is better than the others. They're built for different weeks.

1. Semi-cured gel wraps: nail art that lasts

Semi-cured gel wraps are real gel that's been partly cured in the factory. Because they're still soft, they stretch to hug your exact nail shape. You stick them on, file off the excess, then cure them under a UV/LED lamp for about 60 seconds, and they set rock hard and glossy.

They last 14+ days and take about 30 minutes. They're also where you'll find the most detailed nail art, because designs are printed rather than painted. And they're our only option for toes that lasts.

Best for: nail art lovers, pedicures, and anyone who wants a hard gel finish without painting skills.

2. UV free gel wraps: no lamp, still 10+ days

UV free gel wraps are fully cured before they reach you, so there's nothing to cure at home. Peel, press, file, done. You get the glossy gel look in about 20 minutes, and they last 10+ days.

Because they're flexible, they're very forgiving for first-timers. There's a kids range too, sized for little nails.

Best for: busy weeks, first-timers, and anyone who doesn't want to buy a lamp.

3. Press-ons: done in 3 minutes

Press-ons are full nails that go on over your own, so they add instant length and shape. STIKD Press-Ons are soft gel with an adhesive tab already on each nail. No lamp, no glue, no drying time. A full set takes about 3 minutes (without filing) and lasts 7+ days.

Best for: weddings, work functions, holidays and last-minute plans, or when you want length you don't naturally have.

How to make any at-home manicure last longer

  • Prep is everything. Push back your cuticles and wipe each nail with an alcohol pad. Any oil or lotion on the nail is the number one reason things lift early.
  • Size before you peel. With wraps and press-ons, match a size to every nail first. A wrap that touches your skin or cuticle will lift.
  • Seal the edges. Filing wraps downwards over the tip helps lock the edge.
  • Wear gloves for dishes and cleaning. Long soaks in hot water and harsh cleaners shorten the life of every system.
  • Take it off gently. Picking or peeling by force can lift layers of your natural nail.

So which one should you choose?

Start with the lamp question. Own a lamp? Semi-cured gel wraps give you the longest wear. No lamp? Go UV free wraps or press-ons. Then choose between wear time and speed.

Still not sure? Our Find Your System quiz takes three questions and about thirty seconds. And you can watch how to apply STIKD gel wraps on our How To page.
